§ 01 — Program History

A 48-year
legacy.

Born in Detroit in 1978, built in Oklahoma today — one program, two cities, and four-plus decades of athletes who keep showing up.

1978

Detroit Cheetah Founded

Coach Harry Weaver II launches the Detroit Cheetah to help young athletes earn college scholarships through track and field. The program quickly becomes a national pipeline for collegiate sprinters.

2018

Tulsa Chapter Launched

Coach Weaver and Coach Cory Ray bring the Cheetah model to Tulsa — first competition season in 2019. Same standards, same mentorship, new generation of Oklahoma athletes.

2022

OKC Chapter Launched

Founding coach Rodney Burkes — now coaching at Utah State — and two-time Olympian Coach Melvin Lister III open the Oklahoma City chapter, expanding the Cheetah family across the state. Two cities, one family.

Statewide. National stage.

Athletes from Tulsa, OKC, Bixby, Jenks and beyond competing at the state and national level — and still, every season, sending Cheetahs to college.

Once a Cheetah,
always a Cheetah.

Show up at 8 or 18. New to track or coming back from another sport. We meet athletes where they are — and once they're a Cheetah, they're a Cheetah for life. The track is the vehicle. The lessons are for everywhere else.
